Polyurethanes have been used for many years to produce high performance materials such as solvent-borne coatings. However, though possible to formulate water-borne polyurethane systems, the widely used adipate polyester backbones often cause problems, such as storage stability and chemical and hydrolytic resistance. Polyurethane dispersions based on polyester polyols derived from dimerized fatty acids from renewable resources are now in use. The polyurethane dispersions have found application in UV curable markets, as well as the typical polyurethane areas. Improvement in hydrolytic stability, chemical and UV resistance and mechanical properties are a result.
