USE OF H1 HISTAMINE RECEPTOR ANTAGONISTS FOR THE PREVENTION OR ATTENUATION OF SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH HIGH DOSES OF FEMALE HORMONES

Emergency contraception is a means by which anundesirable pregnancy may be prevented. As such, its use may beenvisaged following unforeseen sexual relations, a burst condom, anda maladjusted diaphragm. Its use may also be justified following arape and noncompliance with the dosing of oral contraceptives. TheYuzpe method is among the most common means of emergencycontraception. Nonetheless, this method entails numerous side effectsof which the most predominant are nausea (54-74 %) and vomiting (24-30 %). The concomitant use of a dimenhydrinate salt (100 mg) thirty tosixty minutes prior to the Yuzpe method results in either the preventionor the attenuation of the aforementioned side effects.
