METHOD AND FACILITY FOR SAFE, POLLUTION-FREE DESTRUCTION OF PFM-TYPE LANDMINES AND OTHER CHEMICAL AND BACTERIOLOGICAL ORDNANCE

A method and facility for safely destroying PFM-type landmines or otherchemicaland bacteriological ordnance is disclosed. The facility comprises of a totallycontainedsystem with the hazards of detonation being confined in a virtually sealedenvironment. PFMmines or other ordnance are electrically detted up and transported into adetonation chamberin which the mines are submerged in coarse silica sand premixed withdecontaminationchemicals prior to detonation. Once detonation is completed, toxic gases arebeing filteredand discharged into the atmosphere by pumping suction. A sand holding chamberinterconnects to the detonation chamber and collects the post-detonation sandadmixed withdetonation debris. Detonation debris are subsequently separated from thesilica sand whichare available to be reused for the next detonation. The destruction methoddoes not produceany undesirable toxic gases and the detonation materials collected from themine destructionscan be used as soil conditioner on calcium-deficient soils.
