DRUG-RELEASING TRABECULAR IMPLANT FOR GLAUCOMA TREATMENT

A device and method are provided for improved treatment of elevatedintraocular pressure due toglaucoma. A trabecular shunting device is adapted for implantation within thetrabecular meshwork of an eyesuch that aqueous humor flows controllably from the anterior chamber of theeye to Schlemm's canal,bypassing the trabecular meshwork. The trabecular shunting device may utilizea quantity of pharmaceuticalseffective in treating glaucoma, which are controllably released from thedevice into cells of the trabecularmeshwork and/or Schlemm's canal. Depending upon the specific treatmentcontemplated, pharmaceuticalsmay be utilized in conjunction with the trabecular shunting device such thataqueous flow either increases ordecreases as desired. Placement of the trabecular shunting device within theeye, and release of a glaucomamedication therefrom, can arrest or slow the progression of glaucoma.
