The present invention relates to a viable mutant strain of S. pombe having a non-calnexin protein-folding pathway activated to a level sufficient for expressing a protein in its functional three-dimensional structure, wherein the strain being viable without calnexin. It also relates to a method for identifying at least one gene involved in formation of prions, comprising the mutant strain of the present invention and to the use of the mutant strain of the present invention for overproducing recombinant proteins wherein the mutant strain being stably transformed to express a recombinant protein.
