The present invention relates to the recognition that syncytial nuclei are able to take up and express foreign nucleic acid molecules to generate recombinant polypeptide. Syncytial extracts and, in particular, syncytial nuclei, may therefore be useful in the production of recombinant nucleic acid and polypeptide and the production of transgenic organisms, particularly plants.
