The invention relates to methods and materials involved in the delivery of nucleic acid to bacteria. In particular, the invention relates to genetically engineered phage and the use of genetically engineered phage to deliver nucleic acid (e.g., nucleic acid encoding antigens or antimicrobial agents) to bacteria. The invention also relates to methods and materials for determining the number of infectious particles needed to infect cells. For example, the invention provides methods that can be used to determine to minimum number of virus needed to infect 99 percent of the cells of a cell population.
