The invention relates to the DegP2 protease, which carries out the primary cleavage of the photo-damaged D1 protein in plants and to DNA sequences, which code for DegP2. The invention also relates to antibodies that bind to DegP2 and to antisense RNAs or ribozymes that are directed against the expression of DegP2. The invention further relates to the use of DegP2 or DNA sequences that code therefor for protecting plants against light-induced damage.
