The invention relates to the transmission of data between two nodes (LTU1, LTU2), which are capable of exchanging data via a packet-oriented network (IP) or via an auxiliary network (ISDN). When a data transmission session is established between the two nodes (LTU1, LTU2), an entry, which describes the quality of the data transmission between the two nodes (LTU1, LTU2), is verified in a directory (M). If the entry indicates a good quality, the session data is routed via the packet-oriented network (IP); if the entry indicates the opposite, the data is routed via the auxiliary network (ISDN). The quality of the transmission between the nodes (LTU1, LTU2) via the packet-oriented network (IP) is measured in cycles and the entry in the directory (M) is updated, if required, using said measurement.
