Process for the preparation of beta-Hydrosyalkylpicolinium salts and picolinium salts as intermediates for the prepation of cationic dyes

N-( beta -hydroxyethyl)picolinium and analogous N-( alpha - and/or beta -alkyl- or -phenyl-substituted beta -hydroxyethyl)picolinium salts (I), excluding halides, are new. New N-( beta -hydroxyethyl)picolinium and analogous N-( alpha - and/or beta -alkyl- or -phenyl-substituted beta -hydroxyethyl)picolinium salts (Ia), excluding halides, are of formula (I), where X- is not halide. A = ring optionally with other substituent(s) and/or condensed with carbo- or heterocyclic rings; R1 = hydrogen (H), cyano (CN), 1-4 carbon (C) alkoxycarbonyl or (substituted) 1-4 C alkyl; R2, R3 = H, (substituted) 1-4 C alkyl or (substituted) phenyl; X- = one equivalent of the anion of a 1- to 3-basic acid, except halide. Independent claims are also included for: (1) dye formulations (A) with a chloride content less than 0.5 wt.%, containing cationic dye(s) prepared from (I); and (2) dye formulations (B) with a chloride content less than 0.5 wt.%, especially less than 0.1 wt.%, containing a cationic dye and beta -hydroxyalkyl hydrogen sulfate, especially beta -hydroxyethyl hydrogen sulfate.
