Process for inspecting a bearing shell and method for removing a connecting rod from a big diesel engine and the tool and engine for doing same

The inspection method involves fastening a slide (8) to a connecting rod (1) before the rod and a bearing base (120) are removed from a bearing cover for inspection. Guide elements (7) are fastened to a stationary part of the engine. Slide and guides are positioned relative to each, so that with movement of the base and rod, the slide is supported on and moves along the guides. The connection between bearing base and cover is released when the connecting rod is in it's lowest position. The rod is then moved into it's highest position, and the slide and guides are then fastened in position. The bearing shell (121) can then be removed if found to be faulty or worn.
