Shot sleeve for a die casting machine and a process for removing impurities

A shot sleeve for a die casting machine comprises an elongated hollow body for receiving and guiding a shot plunger. This body defines an elongated chamber of predetermined cross-section having a front opening to face a sprue runner of a die. According to the invention, the cross-section enlarges over part of its length in forward direction, i.e. towards the front opening. When combined with the shot plunger, it forms a shot unit, and it is preferred, if the plunger's front surface comprises a conical surface which tapers away from a perimetrical scrapping edge of the plunger, the conical surface having a base of smaller cross-section than the perimetrical edge to form a marginal surface under an angle to said conical surface.
