A dialogue apparatus of comparatively small size capable of correctly recognizing a user speech and smoothly performing a dialogue, thereby giving an impression of free dialogue. An image output unit causes a display unit to display an image which proceeds non-interactively with a viewer. A dialogue processing unit outputs apparatus speech data for starting a dialogue according to the dialogue data corresponding to proceeding of the aforementioned image. When a speech is performed by a viewer, the dialogue processing unit outputs apparatus speech data for replying to the speech of the viewer according to the viewer speech data output from a speech recognition unit and the aforementioned dialogue data.
