A method of switching shipping orders for mail items between a sender and at least one carrier, whose services are used to convey the mail item to a receiver, wherein said switching is effected through an intermediary, comprising the steps of: receiving the shipping order of the sender for at least one mailpiece by the promoters, selecting a carrier from a number of available carriers to at least one predetermined selection criterion, said selection is effected before or after receipt of the dispatch order at the agent, and passing the shipping order from the intermediary to the selected carrier.
