Treatment of water to reduce the concentration of methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE) and/or t-amyl methyl ether (TAME) comprises growing Mycobacterium austroafricanum bacteria (CNCM I-2562) under aerobic conditions in the presence of a growth substrate in which MTBE and/or TAME is the sole carbon and energy source.
