A filtration aid for beverages comprises starch granules chemically or physically surface-treated to reduce solubility. Preferred Features: Chemical modifications comprise starch esters and ethers, and particularly phosphoric acid esters. The material may be used alone or in mixtures, e.g. with kieselguhr, perlite, alumina, titanium dioxide, quartz powder, PVPP and, or bast, cotton or cellulosic fibres, or cellulose. The preferred particle size range is 1-100 micron, particularly 40-80 micron.
