The invention relates to a nanoparticulate titanium dioxide with an average particle diameter ranging from 10 to 1000 nm, the particles being coated with a polar organic surface-modifying agent, preferably a phosponic acid. The inventive particles adhere well to dental surfaces and are suitable as tooth-brightening agents in dental cleaning and/or care compositions.
