The present invention relates to a process for preparing a formulation containing a bismuth salt, wherein bismuth oxide is reacted with lactic acid in a specific manner and the resulting mixture of bismuthyl lactate and bismuth lactate is dispersed in the paint binder. Such formulations are used as catalyst components in electrophoretic paints applied by cathodic painting. This type of immersion paint is excellent in coatability and film properties. This eliminates the need for using lead and tin compounds as catalysts.
