PURPOSE: A method and device for authenticating an individual by an optical scanning sensing of a stratum germinatum of the lower surface of a nail is provided to execute a statue pattern of a nail for an individual authentication. CONSTITUTION: A confocal structure for extracting a ridge of a stratum germinatum and a pattern map of a gully is provided. A focus of laser(11) is set below 2 mm by a lens(14). The lens(14) focuses a light generated from the laser(11). The light scans the stratum germinatum using a scanner(13). A beam splitter(12) reflects a light reflected from the scanned stratum germinatum and transmits the light to a collecting lens(15). The collecting lens(15) condenses the light reflected by the beam splitter(12) to a photo detector(16). The photo detector(16) generates an electric signal according to intensities of the condensed light. A band pass filter(17) removes a noise by a reflection of a nail surface.
