PURPOSE: An operation mode detecting method of a heat exchanger by using a hydrogen storage alloy is provided to decide right operation of the heat exchanger by detecting temperature of air through a discharge duct, and to improve the reliability by sensing wrong operation of the reactor. CONSTITUTION: A heat exchanger comprises reactors(2,3), a hydrogen passage pipe(4), a compressor(5), a passage guide duct part, a passage switching damper(6), a blower fan(7) and temperature sensors(57a,57b). Temperature sensors are installed in indoor and outdoor discharge ducts(55) of the heat exchanger, and electrically connected to a control unit. The passage switching damper is turned accurately according to each mode by detecting temperature of air through the discharge ducts in operating the heat exchanger and right operation corresponding to cooling or heating mode.
