The present invention relates to a ferroelectric liquid crystal device containing a liquid crystal mixture comprising components (A) and (B). Component (A) consists of one or more optically active components capable of imparting spontaneous polarization to the material. Component (B) is selected as one or more compounds of formula (I).;In the above formula,;a, b and c are independently 0, 1 and 2,;R ₁ and R ₂ are C _1-15 , preferably C ₃ -C ₁₂ straight or branched chain alkyl or alkoxy.;In the general formula for (B), the CH═CH bond group may be replaced by C ₂ H ₄ and the CH ₂ O bond group may be replaced by OCH ₂ .
