PURPOSE: Provided is a method for removing sulfur from the compound of cerium salt used as an intermediate in preparation of ceric ammonium nitrate by adding ammonia water. Therefore, the prepared ceric ammonium nitrate, (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6, has high purity. CONSTITUTION: The removing method is as follows: adding deionized water of 0.5-10times, preferably 1-3 times, as much as cerium compound to the compound of cerium salt, Ce(OH)x(NO3)y + nH2O (y0, x+y=4, n:integers = 0), and stirring for the sol of cerium compound; adding 18-20% of ammonia water to adjust pH of the sol between 10-11, which is represented by the formula, Ce(OH)x(NO3)y + nNH4OH --Ce(OH)4 + nNH4NO3, and sulfur contained in cerium compound is changed into ammonium sulfate; washing the reaction product(precipitate) with deionized water to remove (NH4)2SO4 and adjust pH of the precipitate between 7-8.
