The system comprises a traffic phase reporting device (5) in the traffic lights themselves that transmits a signal to a receiver (7) in the vehicle. The vehicle also has a traffic lights distance detector (8), a vehicle distance detector (9) for determining the distance to a vehicle in front and a vehicle controller (11) that uses the information from the various sensors to optimize vehicle behavior on approach to the lights.
