The vehicle air conditioning system has a link heat exchanger (38) at the side of the coolant circuit (40), on the pressure side of the compressor (50), in front of the exhaust gas cooler (42). A bypass channel (60) is parallel to the gas cooler, with a switch valve (62) to control the flow through the gas cooler and the bypass. Switch valves (64,66) are at the entry and exit of the gas cooler, controlled according to operating condition parameters. The evaporator (44) is the heat source, when the system is set to act as a heater.
