Identifying compounds (A) with herbicidal activity from ability to reduce or block expression or activity of gene products of specific nucleic acid sequences (I) or amino acid sequences (II) encoded by (I), is new. Identifying compounds (A) with herbicidal activity from ability to reduce or block expression or activity of gene products of specific nucleic acid sequences (I) or amino acid sequences (II) encoded by (I), is new. (I) are: (a) any of 49 552-3435 nucleotide sequences, given in the specification , or their derivatives or fragments with at least 60 % homology; (b) sequences that encode any of 49 183-1144 residue amino acid sequences, (II), given in the specification, or their fragments or derivatives with at least 50% homology, or derivatives with at least 20% homology and equivalent biological activity; (c) sequences that encode a polypeptide fragment or epitope that binds to an antibody specific for a polypeptide encoded by (i); or (d) a nucleic acid encoding a fragment of (i) and having any of about 40 specified enzymatic activities. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) construct containing (I) linked to at least one regulatory signal; (2) (A) identified by the new method that has molecular weight below 1000, inhibition constant below 1 mM and fewer than 3 hydroxy groups on a carbon-containing ring, or is a protein (especially antibody) or antisense RNA; (3) vectors containing the construct of (1); (4) organism containing at least one construct of (1) or vector of (3); (5) method for identifying antagonists (B) of proteins encoded by (I); (6) method for controlling unwanted plant growth using (A) or (B); (7) producing altered gene products from the sequences of (I); (8) producing transgenic plants that are resistant to (A) or (B) by overexpression of (I); and (9) plants produced by method (8).
