A continuous stepped belt (6) conssts of inter-connected steps (4) each of which has a tread surface (16) and a front side (18). Each step is attached at the side to stepped chains (8) driven round a top and bottom deflector(22). One step has at least one roller (34) guided along a guide. The step is fixed to a chain near the front side of the step. A step-roller is positioned on the opposite side (20) to the front side of the step. Side flange elements (28) attached t o the steps belong to a foot-cladding (24) moving together with the steps.
