Gas discharge lamp comprises a discharge gas with a light-emitting substance enclosed in a discharge vessel. The light-emitting substance is produced from a compound made from an element of group IV-A (silicon, germanium, tin and lead) and an element of group IV-B (oxygen, sulfur, selenium and tellurium) with the exception of germanium selenide. Preferred Features: The light-emitting substance is made from germanium telluride (GeTe). The molar ratio of germanium (Ge) to tellurium (Te) is more than 0.25. The discharge gas has a noble gas such as argon as starting gas. The discharge vessel is a spherical quartz vessel.
