A medical implant is made from a magnesium alloy containing additions of rare earth metals and lithium. Preferred Features: The magnesium alloy contains 0-7 wt.% lithium, 0-16 wt.% aluminum and 0-8 wt.% rare earth metals. The rare earth metals are cerium, neodymium and/or praseodymium. The alloy is MgLi4Al4SE2 (where SE = rare earth) or MgY4SE3Li2.4.
