A supported rhodium containing catalyst (I) comprises 0.01-10 wt.% rhodium, 0-10 wt.% manganese and 0-10 wt.% of an alkali metal comprising lithium, sodium and/or potassium and is supported on a zeolite or mesoporous molecular sieve having an average pore diameter of 0.5-30 nm and a specific surface area of 100-1500 m2/g. Independent claims are included for: (1) a process for the production of the catalyst (I) by impregnation of the inert support with an aqueous or organic solution of the catalyst metal compounds, drying, calcining and reducing; and (2) a process for the production of 2C-oxygenates by reaction of CO and H2 in the presence of the catalyst (I).
