A pressure regulator for gases has an adjustment drive (12) with an operating membrane (16) and chamber (20) for a regulation valve with at least one regulation step and a housing (2) with inlet (3) and outlet (5). The design of the unit is such that a high flow rate generates a spatially defined pressure head and or a low static pressure that is linked to the operating chamber (20) via a pressure connection so that the valve plate (15) is adjusted.
