Method whereby the postage for one or more postal items is applied for electronically by a customer. Following the application, the franking number for each item is transmitted to an SMS enabled device of the customer. It is stored in database and applied to the corresponding postal item. The franking text can be read electronically to determine whether it is valid or not. If valid the amount is cancelled and the postal item is forwarded.
