A lighting unit (12) lights up a surrounding area in a vehicle with a source (14) of light. A light-modulating unit (LMU) (22) modulates light in the source of light. Sensors (36,38,40) detect a driving situation. A control unit (34) controls the LMU and couples to the sensors and the LMU in such a way that the control unit uses the detected driving situation to control the LMU.
