To produce an air-permeable carpet floor covering, with the pile fibers anchored in a backing, the carrier material (4) with the pile fibers (5) is initially coated with a latex layer (8) as the backing. A blower (20) is directed at the latex coating before the carpet (2) is dried and the piles are bonded, to give local latex displacement zones for permeability. The carpet is finally passed through a drying station (26) to bond and dry the latex backing.
