The procedure for determining the clearance between the stem of a valve (1) in an internal combustion engine and the movable part (4,8) of an actuator (2) lying loosely upon the valve stem entails defining the existing lift of the movable part during the speed drop or acceleration jump of the movable part shortly after release of the movable part from the closed position, and evaluating and storing the clearance definition. The recorded clearance is integrated in the control of the speed of the movable part when the valve is approaching the closed position in the sense of a gentle seating of the valve on the valve seat.
