A peroxotungsten catalyst contains a nitrogen-containing phosphonic acid (or its alkali or ammonium salt) as stabilizer. The phosphorus:tungsten ratio being 1:50-10:1. A peroxotungsten catalyst contains a nitrogen-containing phosphonic acid (or its alkali or ammonium salt) of formula (I) as stabilizer. The phosphorus:tungsten ratio being 1:50-10:1. (Y-(CH2-)p)nN(-CHq(-PO3H2)3-q)3-n (I) n = 0, 1 or 2; q = 1 or 2; p = an integer 0-16; Y = H, OH, OR1, R1CO, R1COO, CHO, COOH, COOR1, SO3H, F, Cl, Br or R1R2N, with the proviso that Y is not H when q = n = 2; and R1 and R2 = 1-18C alkyl, 5-12C cycloalkyl, 6-18C homo- or hetero-aryl or 6-24C alkylheteroaryl. An Independent claim is also included for oxidation of organic compounds with hydrogen peroxide at 0-140 deg C in a one- or two-phase system in the presence of the catalyst in amounts of 0.0001-1 mol.W per mol. H2O2, the mol. ratio of H2O2:organic substrate being 0.5-10:1.
