Process for removing bubbles from glass bodies comprises preparing a porous glass body; and hot isostatically pressing the glass body at a temperature at which the body has a viscosity of 107.6 to 1013 dPa.s. Preferred Features: The glass body is hot isostatically pressed without using a capsule to enclose the body. The glass body is pressed at a temperature at which the body has a viscosity of 108 to 1011 dPa.s and at a pressure of 800 x 105 to 1200 x 105 Pa (800-1200 bar) for 15 minutes to 6 hours.
