The engine has gas exchange valves and cylinders, at least one of which is operated in an 8-stroke method. During this, there is a sequence of three high pressure loops, each of which is suitable for ignition. Each cylinder has a toothed shaft (1) with axial outer toothing (2) and at least one cam part (3) with corresponding inner toothing. The cam part is fastened non-turnable and axially moveable, to the shaft. The cam part has at least two neighboring cams (6,7) with different strokes and the same base diameter, for each gas exchange valve (4), and two pref. mirror-symmetrical slide grooves (8,8') along its periphery.
