The device has a piezoelectric or magnetostrictive actuator that operates a valve closure body via a hydraulic coupler with a sender piston and a pick-up piston in bores in a guide sleeve with a hydraulic fluid filled chamber between them. A corrugated tube (27b) around the guide sleeve (33) has sealed connections to the pistons (24,34) and seals a storage chamber (37) for the hydraulic fluid with respect to an enclosing fuel chamber (30).
