Selective catalytic gas-phase hydrogenation of alkynes, dienes, alkenynes and/or polyenes in an olefin-containing hydrocarbon stream in a series of two or more reaction zones without feeding part of the hydrocarbon stream between the penultimate and last reaction zones. The process comprises adjusting the hydrogen content before the penultimate zone and the conversion in the penultimate zone so that the reaction mixture leaving the penultimate zone contains at least 0.7 vol.% hydrogen.
