The use of 2-halo-N-alkyl-pyridinium salts (I) in the detection and/or identification of amino acids (A) (especially alpha -amino acids), is new. Independent claims are included for: (1) a method for the detection and/or identification of (A), involves: (i) providing (A) (or a solution containing (A)), (ii) reacting with (I), and (iii) determining the reaction product; and (2) reaction products of (I) with amino acids (or amino acid derivatives) as new compounds.
