A process for the production of formic acid formates comprises reaction of methyl formate with water and a basic compound having a pKa value of the corresponding dissociation step of a least 3 (measured at 25 deg C in aqueous solution), separation of the formed methanol and optionally addition of formic acid to the desired acid content.
