Ligand exchange of organochlorosilanes in ionic liquids

Catalysts dissolved in ionic liquids are used in a method for the rearrangement of silanes (1) by ligand exchange involving: (A) disproportionation of (1); or (B) reaction of (1) with a different silane (2). A method for the rearrangement of silanes of formula (1) by ligand exchange involves either: (A) disproportionation of (1); or (B) reaction with another silane of formula (2), in the presence of a catalyst dissolved in an ionic liquid. R1aHbSiCl4-a-b (1) R2cHdSiCl4-c-d (2) R1, R2 = 1-18C hydrocarbyl; a, c = 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4; b, d = 0, 1, 2 or 3.
