A wiping drive (2) is described by a state vector, is supplied with an input vector, and produces an output vector. A system monitor (4) receives the input vector and describes a model of the wiper drive. The system monitor determines a reconstructed output vector from the input vector. The real output vector from the wiper drive is measured, and the difference between the real output vector and the reconstructed output vector is used to derive the input vector to control the wiper drive. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Wiper controller; and (2) a wiper apparatus.
