A method for the determination of nitrogen oxides in an exhaust gas, which flows through the exhaust line of a combustion unit, in particular an internal combustion engine, is disclosed, in which nitrogen monoxide (NO) contained in the exhaust gas is oxidised. The nitrogen monoxide (NO) is oxidised by electrochemical means in an electrochemical cell (31, 32, 33) and the oxidation current flowing in the electrochemical cell (31, 32, 33) is determined as a measure of the concentration of nitrogen monoxide (NO) in the exhaust gas.
