Hinged to one or both roof rack side rails (4,6) is a cross support (18,20) which when swung out can be releasably hinged to the opposing rail but when retracted lies parallel to the home rail. When retracted, the cross support (18,20) retracts into a groove (14) provided in its home rail. The support is springloaded when swung out and can be locked to the opposing rail. One or both supports (18,20) has a carrier for skis, bicycles, baggage etc.
