Method has the following steps: fixing of a signal analysis window based on engine state; sampling of the sensor signal within the window at a given sampling frequency; and application of a Fourier transform to the sample valves. Also the sampling frequency is adjusted prior to a normal engine operating state to a range of frequencies corresponding to a knocking event and the output signal is calculated, in a control operation for different sampling frequencies, with the sampling frequency during normal operation adjusted to the value for which the output signal is a maximum.
