The bench seat has two parallel side guide rails, a securing rail (17) with toothing (19), and a securing slide (18), which locks into the toothing via a locking element (20). A safety device (16) has an inertia body (26), which is position-adjusted by acceleration or deceleration forces, to actuate a switch. The inertia body has a cam (28) acting with the locking element to lock it with the toothing when its position changes. The body is formed as a pendulum (27), moving about a pref. horizontal pivot axis, or a longitudinally moveable slide. Actuation of the switch also triggers e.g. airbags and seat belt tensioners.
