The engine has an exhaust gas turbocharger with a compressor and a variable geometry turbine and a bypass bridging the turbine in which a valve (waste gate) controls the throughput. A pressure sensor (22) determines the pressure in or upstream of the turbine (3) and sends it to an electronic controller (35) that controls the turbine geometry if the pressure exceeds a threshold to prevent turbine damage. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating an internal combustion engine with an exhaust gas turbocharger.
