The method has the occupation of an automobile passenger seat incorporating a seat occupation detection mat evaluated via the detected contour and pressure loading of the seat occupation detection mat using an associated processing unit. The seat is moved upwards and the pressure loading is re-evaluated, the evaluation terminated when both loadings agree and the seatbelt tension reduced before re-evaluation when a higher loading is obtained in the raised position.
