The device comprises a measuring system which has a positioning mechanism (50) for positioning the stand (31) with regard to an element (32) held inside the welding head (22) in different operating positions (a-c). The measuring system is designed for positioning the stand each time into an appropriate operating position for each stored welding position. The positioning mechanism has a stand path sensor (60) which detects the position of the support. An Independent claim is also included for the method of short-time arc welding.
